  1. Separate authentication archive settings

Replication of Auth- Auth Settings is fine, however this does not help in a mixed environment as it replicates the Authentication method i.e. LDAP or NTLM, not just the group mappings.

Solution is that we need to septate the group relationships and the Authentication settings.

  2. Block/Alert about reports being sent when there is no content in the report

When the import engine is behind, and a scheduled report is sent out, it is sent out with incomplete or no data.

When scheduled reports are sent straight out to management, we look a bit stupid to have done this.

I would suggest that the reporting engine checks that the importing process is up to date for the end date of the requested report, and alerts - doesn't send out the report - or provides a suitable warning in the report, when it knows that the data is incomplete

  3. Youtube HTML5 Cookie

Could apply to other cookies as well, but having the option to override cookies for specific sites, for example to set Youtube HTML5 mode across a whole location (ie a room of Macs) via cookie modification.

  4. Exclude your ISP's dns from IDS checks

We are currently getting a lot of "Potential DNS Command and Control via TXT queries" going from us to our ISP's primary dns server. I doubt that there is anything bad going on and i think it is more likely to be our 2 internal dns servers talking to our ISP.

  5. Update Mobile Guardian via the smoothwall which it is connected to

When there is an available update for Mobile Guardian on windows machines, the smoothwall which the mobile guardian client is connected to, should have an option to roll out the update to the machine silently and update it remotely.
The user should be able to tick a few clients and roll out the new update when it specifies that an update is available (e.g. 1.3.0 when (and if) it is released).

  7. Ability to make Guardian3 to listen on internal Aliases

When trying to replace a existing multiple web filtering solution, have situation that the smoothwall needs to have multiple IP's on the same subnet. Only means to do this with out causing a "ARP FLUX" is to use internal aliases, this bring 2 IP's up on the secondary IP on the same network card. Problem is Guardian does not listen on this IP and so no means to take over running this proxy service on this IP.

Modification so that Guardian listens on these seconday interface IP's.

  8. Update Guardian 3 'Online Help'

When clicking Help on Guardian 3 the online help (which is hosted within the software) it contains Guardian 2 information, which is obviously not applicable and not helpful. Get rid of the Guardian 2 info and make sure the G3 stuff is correct.

  9. Complete the Guardian 3 manual

The manual for Guardian 3 is incomplete (having only one page of index and 100 pages), the Guardian 2 manual is over 300 pages!

  10. the ability set rules based on mac address

I had spoke with a Director that would like the ability to set rules based on mac address so he could apply a set of rules for his mobile devices that would not require authentication and would work across all of his subnet's .

This would have one massive flaw – MAC address is not passed on by a router. It’s only visible to devices on the same subnet. Which makes for quite a big limitation to how useful it would be!

  13. Allow /var/log, /var/log/datastore and /var/log/dansguardian to be on different drives

In big (ish) deployments these take up a LOT of space, and disk time. Having the lot on one set of disks means that the disks can't keep up, and there's often problems with making the drive/array/partition big enough to store all the logs an organisation may need (e.g. keeping 12 months for compliance)

Smoothwall install currently is clever enough to spot two disks and provides the option of having the system on one, and /var/log on another.

If this option was simply extended to allow further seperation for /var/log/datastore and /var/log/dansguardian this would help in large installations where there…

  14. Ability to have PPPoE profile on secondary external connection

Customer has 3 PPPoE lines (fibre to cabinet) and requires the product to support PPPoE on secondary connections.

Add ability to bring up PPPoE connection on secondary lines.
Add ability to DHCP address settings for secondary lines.

  15. Support for Captive Auto-Login on Apple Devices

Support for the built in Captive Auto-Login program on Apple Devices, when connecting to a wireless network, the apple device tries to figure out if it is connected to the internet by trying to resolve "http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html", if it is not successful then it asks the user to log in to the Wireless network.
At current, this auto-login prompt doesn't come up and to authenticate with the wireless network through a smoothwall, you need to open your browser and log into the SSL Login Page.

  16. Central Management - Central Alerting

In the new Central management system, a customer has observed that where they are operating a 'managed service' for their client sites they would like to see an alerting ability on the Parent node that emails the team when a child node fails. They would like to configure alerts for available updates, failed services, high loads, connection failures, inability of the parent node to contact child node etc.

  19. User Agent as policy object

In some circumstances it would be useful to be able to define the user agent as a policy object for use in Guardian. For example the Microsoft Office Existence Discovery UA is used by Office to check for live versions of documents as Office doesn't support NTLM it can cause authentication pop-ups, being able to set the UA to not require authentication could be a fix for this.

  20. Colors in realtime logs

Inbound blocked rose, outbound blocked RED, forward light green, outbound allowed green, etc ..

It would make looking @ the Realtime logs easier. Everything blends together otherwise.
