  1. Wildcard Usage

Please add the ability to use wildcards at least in blocked content. For example: *.fmovies.* If we could just put that in, we wouldn't have to spend more time blocking 5t3.fmovies.com or fmovies.com and .net..whatever. You get the point I am sure. This would ease administration for smaller districts that use your product that don't have someone that JUST handles filtering and firewall operations.

  2. Acceptable Usage Policy Prompt User First Access

It would be useful if you could store and electronic version of organisations internet usage policy within Smoothwall and on first access to the internet from a user they are prompted to read and accept the version of the usage policy that is current in the system before being granted internet access.

Smoothwall will then log that the policy has been read/ackknowledge by the user for reporting purposes.

If the Administrator then updates the usage policy the next time a user attempts to access the internet they are presented with the revised policy to review and accept.

  3. manual exclusions for safeguarding report

It would be REALLY useful to be able to go to the Reports>Safeguarding>Exclusions page and manually add domain level exclusions there, rather than have to click through the safeguarding report

  5. Display a Filter List Description in the Portal

When users are using the portal they currently cannot see the descriptive comments in the "Manage Filter Lists" that set in the admin console under Guardian > Policy Objects > Categories in the Comment field. It would be beneficial that portal users who can edit the Lists know what each of he lists do in order to aid them using the right filter list. Displaying this comment under the title would achieve this

  6. User Breakdown Report

This report can help admins see which individual websites, users spend the most time on during the day or a period of time.

A list of 10,20,50,100..etc users can be run to show (per individual user) the breakdown of the Time Spent Browsing.

    Example - User John Smith

    Site - Time Spent
    BBC - 3hrs 3mins
    Twitter - 2hrs 35mins
    YouTube - 39mins
    etc...

This will allow admins to find out what sites certain users enjoy frequently browsing and to prove if someone is potentially not doing the correct thing at the correct time (Games at school) (Social Media at…

  7. Guest Portal

Add a guest portal that allows us to authenticate external users by registering for an account, that then can be reported on by name rather than just MAC address. Need for liability coverage and identification.

  8. Traffic Graph scaling

Traffic graphs have been changed recently to adjust from 100Mbps to 1Gbps when 100Mbps is exceeded. Can this be changed to a user defined value. Eg we have a 200Mbps link and if we could have the graph only go this high it would show us more accurately when our connection is being saturated. Its currently hard to tell when its scaling to 1Gbps. Thanks/

  9. bandwidth module improvements "Policing"

The current Bandwidth Module provides "shaping" which is only good for outbound connections. Its a store and forward from my understanding.

Policing on the other hand can be applied to both inbound and outbound connections. It relies on IP (i believe) to slow down the connection by dropping packets. (Would only be good for TCP) It would be great if we could limit inbound and outbound based on External and Internal ip addresses. Currently inbound connections can flood the whole RED adapter.

Example an internal address requests data from say Microsoft Updates. The Max connection rate will be used to…

Enable or disable the https inspection for different locations, therefore, trusted in house device don't keep seeing the same message. BOYD devices can see it the message daily.

  11. External Interfaces in their own fixed position at the top of the page

    Hi,
I don't think the revised traffic monitor page is an improvement.
The scroll box with the interfaces is an annoyance.
An improvement would be to separate the external interfaces and place the primaries at the top of the page in their own fixed position with traffic graphs for each.
Then the internal interfaces could be listed separately.
I would also appreciate a lot more individual connections in the listing at the bottom.
Perhaps the individual listings could be expanded with a scroll box.

  12. Manage Categories - Show examples of Search term filterings, URL Patterns, Files types

Would it be possible for smoothwall to add some extra information to the Categories page under Guardian > Policy Objects > Categories which would show examples of what can be inputted into the tables (domain.URL Filtering, Search Term filtering, URL Patterns and File Types).

  13. Traffic Graph

Could we see the timeline along the bottom of the traffic graph? I would like the graph to be a lot larger, also. I would like to be able to choose the time frame for the graph, such as last 5 minutes, last 30 minutes, last hour, etc etc.

  16. Categories - See whats in the standard Categories

It would be great if smoothwall could populate/show the Standard Categories lists with data. At the moment everything is blank. Would this be possible to do. Maybe have an option to show / hide this as i can imagine smoothwall wouldn't want users to delete data from these Standard Categories.

By showing data in these categories, it would give us a better understanding of the type of sites that are blocked and would be helpful to pass a few sites on to users to access rather than having to test them. An example is MUSIC. A teacher asked for music…

  18. Bulk import of IP addresses

  19. Show host name instead of IP address on traffic graphs

The real time traffic graphs show IP addresses and current bandwidth usage, it would be awesome if the IP addresses could be translated to hostnames (maybe via nslookup) as it would save us time having to do this translation ourselves.

Reporting again Please vote if you want to change this.

We require simple reports that we can hand over to our HR team about users internet activity. Something that would say joe bloggs was on Facebook at 14:00 for 2 Hrs on this date.

Every report we run means we have to spend hours simplifying these reports for a non IT person to be able to understand.

Subject name on each group in a report so multiple queries can be run in a single report with simple headings for each group query. This will help creating reports for managers with…

    started  ·  Chris Humby responded

    Hi,

    This is one of our most voted ideas and we used the feedback to help build our Safeguarding reports in Framlingham and Glamis releases. Aim was to provide something that;

    • Simple and easy to understand so it can be delivered and used directly by Safeguarding officers, HR and other non-IT personnel with minimal understanding of web technology.
    • Highlighted the breaches and intent with specific colour coded breach levels and relevant information highlighting the user intent.
    • Report broken down in to headers on a per user basis.
    • Ability to delegate, email or print reports directly to the relevant department, minimising IT departments overheads with this work.

We know many customers are using these reports already and have received much positive feedback.

However, I can see from previous comments there’s still room for improvement and you have some smart ideas on how to take this further. I’m…
