  1. Web Filter Logs

Web Filter Logs changed... not exactly for the better. Now I can not specify time range. Specifying time for particular client only allows a max of 100/page - I need entire day of allowed and denies. It seems you are trying to migrate your users to use Reports, but using Web Filter Log, specifying date, time and how many rows, like 50,000 was a lot faster when I needed a quick report for client.

Exporting report from new Web Filter Log is a joke. Have you guys even tried it? It doesn't supply the URL, nothing like the old export.

under review  ·  Tanja Erhardt responded

We are looking to add filtering by group at some point. Some of the other items are also under discussion.

  3. Reporting

The Reporting section is still pretty unusable. It does not have many useful reports and the process of creating custom one is still as tedious and confusing as ever. This has been and remains as the "Achilles heel" for Smoothwall .....

  4. Fix System Load Average (System Resource Monitoring) Alert

The system includes an alert based on CPU activity (load average) and comes preconfigured with warning level of 1.0 per CPU core, which is very logical. Unfortunately, on the S12 appliance the threshold calculations are apparently broken. To wit, the system has two hex-core CPUs with hyperthreading for a total of 12 real cores or 24 logical processors (so reported in the dashboard). But with the default warning level of 1.0/CPU, it starts spamming warning alerts at an overall load average of 3.0, instead of the expected 24.0 (or at least 12.0).

  6. Temporary rules

IT would be good to be able to put in a rule "allow X in location Y until 5pm" - especiually via the portal. Could eventually replace the hacky "temp ban" group mangle?

Edit: this is specifically "rules which expire, and then go away" so "allow this site until 17:00 on the 12th of July 2010"

  7. Make warning messages about hardware failure more prominent

Kernel has pasted into logs that it has found a hardware issue for example with the hard drive.

In the real time system log, the message has shot by pretty quick and the user has missed the error.

Generally, the user doesn't sift through all the system logs every day until they suspect there is an issue.

If the Kernel log has only posted once or twice about hardware failure then it can take a while finding out what has happened.

This request is to make the error be more prominent to the user either by a popup when the…

  8. Layer 7 rules should be both allow and deny

Presently (Kennilworth) layer 7 filtering can only be applied to deny rules. This doesn't seem helpful to organisations that begin with a "block all ports and open only what we need" strategy which seems to be the most common strategy.

It would be most helpful (and an excellent selling point) if we could just allow Dropbox or Skype or WhatsApp with the bare minimum of effort.

Currently this is not possible to achieve, as layer7 relies on allowing a few “unknown” packets through before we get an idea of what the traffic is. As such, you can’t work out what the traffic is until too late for an “allow”.

We’re looking at Layer7 options that provide a “first packet ID” but this is early stages

  9. More filter options in web filter log viewer

    More filter options like:

    1. Start date/time and end date/time - so you can search the logs and specify 11.00-12.00 only

    2. Computer Hostname

    3. MAC Address

  10. Block page to have a link to helpdesk

Would it be possible to have a button or a link on the block page which would allow the user to report the blocked site which would link into a helpdesk (spiceworks). We use OWA rather than outlook client so there's no default email client.

  11. User Activity - Current Active Session Count

    I would like a count of active users on the User Activity page. Eg;
Current Active User Sessions = 550
Current Disconnected Sessions = 40 <--------- not so important

  12. DHCP MAC address blocking

Giving the options to block MAC addresses from getting a DHCP assignment. Currently you can only give a INVALID IP out to stop the pc getting network access.

Giving the smoothwall the ablitiy to ignore a DHCP request from a list of blacklisted IP's would be the preffrible.

  13. Bandwidth Module to monitor LAN

I would like the bandwidth module to have the option to monitor LAN, here is the scenario, we have multiple subnets the run through the Smoothwall and rather than traffic shaping everyone that runs through the LAN I would like to be able to apply set limits to individual networks. This would be excellent in a corporate network or those company's running cloud networks.

  14. Be able to setup 2 week timetable slots

Ok, this might be pushing the limits of the smoothwall but would it be possible to set a 2 week timetable via the quota?

It would mean having an internal calendar but we are having so many requests now for groups of sites to be unblocked we keep having to go into the smoothie and turn policies on or off so having this means we can setup a 2 week time slots

  15. Avahi reflector for lans / vlans

Add Avahi for mdns / bonjour reflection between lans and vlans (eg wireless vlan and domain lan) to enable airplay services to run.

  16. Notes! Notes! and MORE NOTES!

On all pages, but especially on those pages where you enter in things like IP addresses for exceptions, a note field is suggested. That way I can enter in what that IP address actually is and won't question the entry later.

  17. Safeguarding portal report to external file

It would be very useful if users (usualing safeguarding officer in school) of safeguarding portal could save given reports to external file, like csv. This would allow them to filter data much easier.

  18. Show host name instead of IP address on traffic graphs

The real time traffic graphs show IP addresses and current bandwidth usage, it would be awesome if the IP addresses could be translated to hostnames (maybe via nslookup) as it would save us time having to do this translation ourselves.

  19. New Logs System

The new web filter log system doesn't currently seem to allow you to navigate between pages which prevents you from seeing more than 100 results. There is an option at the bottom to show a specific number of logs per page which can be increased from 10 to 100 but no visible options to actually move to the next page.

I would also like to enquire if it would be possible to restore the feature to select a time range rather than having it limited to a two hour period as we often have a need to export logs beyond…
