  1. Improve HW failover to monitor connectivity and services

Currently hardware fail-over requires a full failure of the primary system and to become unavailable on the heartbeat interface for it to switch over to the slave. This can mean a system with a failed filtering service or network interface will be left running instead of switching to the fail-over system.

Ideally the fail-over system could be expanded to include monitoring enabled critical services for failure (Eg Guardian, VPN etc) and also network interfaces for loss of connectivity.

  2. Allow support for HSRP in Failover

Current failover requires a heartbeat connection between the 2 Smoothwalls where they share all the same settings including IP addresses.
When updating and some other Scenarios, a term used by Support called "Split Brain" happens, this is when the Failover believes the Master went down as it didn't respond to ping for a small period of time and tries to take control, then the Master sends the signal to the Failover to enter standby while the Failover is half way through starting and causes some services to be active and some to be down, all while both boxes are fighting…

  3. On the exceptions page..

Have a field for notes, so that we can identify what the IP address that has and exception is and why it is an exception..

  4. Allow NAGIOS monitoring

Allow Smoothwall to be monitored by a NAGIOS server. This would involve installing and supporting the NRPE software with specific NAGIOS plugins for Smoothwall.

  5. Audit logs for changes made to console settings

We have had two instances now, where changes have been made to filter policies on the console by Admins, where we needed a log of when and by who the changes were made? We can get when someone logged in, but not what they actually did. This is compliance with the NEN Security guidelines.

  7. Additional SNMP agents

Could we have a couple of extra agents that we can query please on a per node basis? Some of these may already exist but I haven't found them yet.

I would like to be able to monitor-
    Number of logged on users
    Count of core services
    Count of optional services
Either web requests or mean requests/min
    Median service time
Number of hits/blocks- the data in the graph on the logs >> web filter page (won't be as good but will show broad overview.)

  8. Automatic IPSec Tunnel creation through Central Management

Create the ability for automatic VPN tunnel creation based on policy rules for centrally managed Smoothwalls.

For example, 15 centrally managed smoothwalls, create a policy rule that automatically creates tunnels to create a meshed vpn environment with the other centrally managed sites.

  9. We need LACP

The LAN bond feature needs to support LACP, so that, if we are using more than 1 Gigabit WAN connection, we can use it! As it is now, we have 2 ISPs, with 1Gb each. However, because there is only 1 LAN connection, at 1Gbps, the maximum we can send/receive from the WAN is 1 gigabit per second. The LAN connection becomes saturated, even though the ISP connections are only at 50%.

  10. Andriod, IOS Managment APP

What are the chances of having a App so that we can access core functions of smoothwall from our mobile devices, IE restart server, quick block/unblock basic log searching.

The amount of times we are asked to block or unblock a site but we are not near our control pc so if there was a quick use app.

    Right now… zero :(

There’s currently no way to make an app control the Smoothwall directly. But… future work we have planned require us to write APIs which would allow exactly that sort of thing. An app is not to of the pile of things to do once we have an API – better management interfaces and systems in general are – but it’s not out of the question.

  11. Central Management - Central Alerting

In the new Central management system, a customer has observed that where they are operating a 'managed service' for their client sites they would like to see an alerting ability on the Parent node that emails the team when a child node fails. They would like to configure alerts for available updates, failed services, high loads, connection failures, inability of the parent node to contact child node etc.

  12. Separate authentication archive settings

Replication of Auth- Auth Settings is fine, however this does not help in a mixed environment as it replicates the Authentication method i.e. LDAP or NTLM, not just the group mappings.

Solution is that we need to septate the group relationships and the Authentication settings.

  13. Add additional granularity to feature delegation

When delegating rights to GUI / Portal users it would be useful to be able to have more granular control over what features were available. For example, if access to "Realtime logs" is enabled, that user does not have access to view the web filter logs, as this is granted by access to the reporting system which we wouldn't want to delegate out to all support staff. Additionally, granting access to the "Guardian" system allows access to policies, block pages, authentication policies etc. where it would be useful to have the option to only delegate access to categories/category groups/custom allow/block…

  14. The ability to be able to customise the frequency of alerts being sent from the GUI to alert to the fact that an update is available

The ability to be able to customise the frequency of alerts being sent from the GUI to alert to the fact that an update is available. e.g the alert is not sent every time the Smoothwall calls home

  15. Smoothwall should become a member of tsanet

Smoothwall should become a member of TSANet (https://tsanet.org/)

TSANet brings vendors together to help resolve issues. For example if you have an issue that could relate to Smoothwall but other vendors need to be involved, it means the vendors can work together and keep the client up to date with the issue.

TSANet has over 500 members including Citrix, VMWare, Microsoft, Cisco, IBM and many many more.

  16. Email Notifications for errors and warnings

It would be good if Smoothwall could email out alerts to administrators if and when there are any issues with Smoothwall. For example, disk space low, RAM usage high, updates available, services changed state, failover is now active etc etc

  17. Sub release information shown in central management

Show the sub release version under installed release for local and child nodes. i.e. rather than just showing Glamis, Inverness show Glamis-3 inverness-0 Inverness-1 etc. etc.

  18. Link for MIB download

Can we get a link to download the MIB's for adding to external SNMP Monitoring solutions like Zabbix?

  19. Allow archives to be sent off box via FTP/SFTP

It appears there are options to have config backups/archives sent off the Smoothwall automatically via SSH. Can you add the ability to do this via FTP/SFTP?

  20. Restart Web Proxy on Replicated SWG

In my current setup, we have a Smoothwall and a separate Web Filter (SWG)...If I add an Exemption from the web interface of the Firewall and restart the proxy, I still have to log in to the Web Filter and restart the proxy there.

Ideally, when I click the 'Restart Proxy' link, it should restart the proxy both on the Firewall *and* the Web Filter!
