User Interface
This forum is for suggestions on how to make the Smoothwall user experience better – more usable, nicer looking, easier to use in different browsers, more understandable… as long as it isn’t “feature” feel free to add your ideas.

Add function to block user groups in Portal
There ought to be function to turn off an entire group of users in the portal, in the same way as Ban locations. (allow or block)
This would be good because then you can turn off the internet for an entire grade of students, when they have written tests in different locations a certain time of day.
Obviously it would be great to also be able to set start and stop times, but you can start with just allow and block.

Sort out the NTLM authentication failed dialog
It doesn't look the same as the block page and confuses users (and says contact your administrator rather than who that administrator is)

include a diagnostic "is it working" on auth settings page
Each directory should be marked as working/not working if it is enabled, this way a user can instantly see if their settings "took". The "not working" graphic should click thru to diags

Display Complete Traffic Units on Dashboard Graph
The Dashboard traffic graph just shows "k" for the units, whereas they are technically kBytes/sec (according to Smoothwall support). Can this be updated to show kB/s? Should be a simple fix.

Colors in realtime logs
Inbound blocked rose, outbound blocked RED, forward light green, outbound allowed green, etc ..
It would make looking @ the Realtime logs easier. Everything blends together otherwise.

Get Expired Bans on the Portal to disappear after a certain time period
At current, after Temporary bans expire, they stay until a Smoothwall Admin clears the expired bans on the Web Control Panel.
A few users have requested that expired bans should disappear after a set period of time say 24 hours.13 votes -
Avoid truncating domain names in 'Top Domain' section of Dashboard
At the moment long domain names are truncated in the 'Top Domain' section of the Dashboard.
For example the domain
'o-o.preferred.iad09g05.v23.lscache5.c.youtube.com' is shown as 'o-o.preferred.iad09g05.v6.lsc'In this case it is not possible to see the actual domain 'youtube.com' in the list.
Either reduce the white space in this area in order to show more text, or truncate the start of the domain name and use an ellipsis to show it has been truncated.
The domain name is more important to understand what is happening then sub domain name.

Make updates more safe to roll out.
At the moment there is no confirmation for updates. You just hit a button and all updates are applied. Even if they will cause downtime, this is unacceptable for a professional workenvironment for which smoothwall aims to provide services.
First of all lets categorise updates by expected impact and importance. So a simple update that will have no impact on the functioning of a machine can be automatically rolled out without intervention of the operator.
But an update which requires a reboot should need additional confirmation before it will be applied. Something like: "This update will require a reboot. Are…

Include 'run configuration checks' button in 'Authentication Settings' page
In Services > Authentication include a button to run configuration checks on the settings page, or include separate check buttons for each directory server.
When adding a second domain controller to the settings page, you must swap pages to run the configuration checks. When they fail you have to swap again to make any changes.
Alternatively combine the 'control' and 'settings' pages.

On the Dashboard remove the heart beat IP addresses from the IP statistics section.
On the Dashboard remove the fail over heart beat IP addresses from the 'Per IP Address Statistics'.They don't really belong with the rest of the network devices as they only communicate between themselves, and won't be sending data externally. Also the data volumes are well above what other nodes generate.
They could be relocated to the 'Interface and Host Bandwidth' section, including a separate section for 'Fail Over' similar to how 'SSL VPN' appears here.
Failing that, group them together in their own section.

Link 'Top Domain' section of Dashboard to related reports
Link the entries in the 'Top Domains' section on the Dash Board to the reporting engine, so that you can click through to see who has been using the top domains.
For consistency this wants to be the same list of options that you get in the 'Top Domains' report.

Email Queue doesn't show as much information that could be helpful
The email queue doesn't have the space to show as much information as would be helpful. Half of the reason as to why the email is in the queue is truncated, which for some people, causes annoyance.

Easier reordering of groups under Authentication
Currently, in the Services > Authentication > Groups area, the list must be reordered by means of a checkbox and Move Up / Move Down buttons with a page reload inbetween each button push.
Contrast to the Guardian policies, which are drag and drop, and much easier.
Any chance of getting the newer system moved out to all areas where there are ordered lists? It's painful clicking a dozen times to get a group in the right place at the moment...

Should be able to choose font size
Whilst the new GUI handles higher screen resolutions, I find that the default size is too large. It may be because it is (initially) designed for Tablet useage, but for a desktop / high resolution display I miss viewing as much information as possible.
Initial fix is to reduce the text size to 'smaller' (smallest is too small).
Changed description, as some find it too large, others too small - TN

Alternate Line Colouring throughout
Not all areas have alternate line colouring e.g. Guardian >> Policy Objects >> User Defined, which makes it difficult to track which edit icon you need to click.
Alternatively, or ideally as well as, a click on the name of the item should open a pop up with the options there, so I could click on Staff Allowed and be offered Edit and Delete in a context menu.
An optional comment metadata field for entries in these user defined groups would also be very handy, so that when a URL is unblocked a note can be attached with requesting teacher,…

More consistency across all sections/module interfaces
"If it looks the same, it should act the same"
For example Guardian 3 now has the new enabled/disabled sliders but under networking section such as port forwards you have just a enabled/disabled image and no slider.
4 votesthis is a bit “general”, but certainly we should keep this as an aim in mind whenever we change anything in smoothie – Chris, feel free to add any specifics as new ideas then we can mark them “done” when they are done

Allow users to ping IPs from the "subnets" page so it is easy to test that that subnet is accessible
can any checks be automated?
